ABSTRACT

This study reviews soil preparation techniques for felling areas of Canadian poplar plantations from the perspective of sustainable forest management. It describes changes in soil conditions after felling and their impact on the effectiveness of forest regeneration. It describes traditional soil preparation methods, with particular emphasis on stump removal, deep plowing, and stump grinding, and evaluates their advantages and limitations. In addition, it reviews modern, soil-conserving solutions, such as the use of forestry tillers and the biological decomposition of stumps. Based on the findings in the literature, it can be concluded that soil-conserving technologies contribute to the preservation of soil structure and soil life, reduce environmental impact, and support sustainable biomass production. Due to climate change and changes of site conditions, site-specific, precision, and circular soil preparation systems are playing an increasingly important role in future forest management, as they serve to balance economic efficiency with ecological sustainability.
